Rare Documented .50-100-450 Caliber Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Lever Action Rifle with Inscribed Barrel and Factory Letter Special order Winchester Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle manufactured in 1896. This rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter that describes this rifle as: "Rifle, 50/100 caliber, Barrel Shape: 1/2 Octagon, Plain trigger, Checkered stock with old style pistol grip, oil finish, 1/2 magazine, 5 cartridge" and "Shotgun butt rubber butt plate, silver plate". The Cody letter states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on February 5, 1896, and returned for repair on March 3, 1896. The half-round/half-octagon barrel, magazine and bolt have the Winchester charcoal blue finish. The loading gate is niter blue. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, trigger and lever are color casehardened. The pistol grip stock and forearm are highly figured, fancy grade, walnut with Winchester "Style H" checkering and high polish piano finish. The early style rounded pistol grip has an ebony inlay. An oval silver plate is inlaid in the bottom of the forearm between the checkered panel and the receiver. The stock has a 1 1/4 inch wide orange rubber recoil pad with 1/4 inch black spacer. The bottom of the recoil pad has a black leather cover. The stock and forearm cap are fitted with eyes for detachable sling swivels and the rifle has detachable sling swivels and a 1-inch wide russet leather sling. The barrel has a Winchester Express front sight with silver or platinum bead and Winchester Express rear sight with three folding short yardage leaves with platinum sight lines. A Lyman folding combination rear sight is mounted on the receiver tang. The left barrel flat is inscribed: "CLIFFORD WARREN SMITH" in block letters between the rear sight and the receiver. This inscription may have been added to the barrel when the rifle was returned to Winchester in March 1896. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO.NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The caliber, "50-100-450" is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver. The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are roll-stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger. The serial number is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang behind the tang screw. The 50-100-450 cartridge was introduced in the Winchester Model 1886. Model 1886 rifles chambered for the 50-100-450 cartridge are rare. The barrel and receiver retain 85% of the original blue finish with some minor edge wear and scattered age spotting. The Winchester legend, caliber markings and inscription are crisp. More than 90% of the blue finish remains on the bolt. The loading gate retains 70% of the nitre blue finish. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer and lever 60% of the fiery case colors. The case colors on the top and sides of the receiver are vivid. The case colors on the contact points on the bottom and left front of the receiver show handling wear and have faded to a mottled gray patina. Half of the case colors are present on the hammer and lever. There are a few minor few spots of age discoloration on the sides of the lever. The highly figured, fancy grade, walnut stock and forearm have most of the reoiled finish and have moderate handling wear. The checkering on the pistol grip and forearm is sharp. The rubber recoil pad has some age cracking and the rubber is flaking on the upper right side and heel. About 1/3 of the black leather pad cover has flaked off the bottom of the recoil pad. The russet leather sling remains in very good condition. This is a very fine example of a special order Winchester Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle with inscribed barrel chambered for the rarely encountered 50-100-450 cartridge.
