Magnificent Documented Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Fancy Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter The factory letter indicates the rifle was serial numbered on September 17, 1891, and received in the warehouse and shipped the next day in order 10557 as a .40-65 rifle with half octagon barrel, plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, and half magazine. The letter confirms it was returned and repaired on October 23, 1913, in order 52135. The rifle has a full octagon barrel chambered for the .40-82 W.C.F. cartridge rather than the original barrel. This barrel was almost certainly fitted when the rifle was returned to the Winchester factory in 1913. The forearm and sock are highly figured XXX or XXXX fancy grade walnut with Style H checkering and high polish piano finish. The stock has an ebony inlay in the pistol grip and a crescent buttplate. The barrel, bolt and loading gate are blued, and the forearm cap, receiver, hammer, trigger, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The barrel has a "Winchester Express" front sight with white bead and a buckhorn sporting rear sight with serrated edges. A Lyman folding combination rear sight is mounted on the receiver tang. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. "40-82 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger, and the serial number is stamped in script numerals between the tang screws. Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1886-Rifle BBL: 26 inch octagon Stock: walnut checkered Gauge: 40-82 WCF Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: 61987 Class: Antique Condition: Excellent. This rifle retains 97% plus of the original blue and vivid color casehardened finish. The barrel shows only very minor finish wear on the edges with perfect markings. The bolt has nearly all of the blue finish. The loading gate has several tiny spots of age discoloration and retains more than 90% of the blue finish. The receiver, hammer and lever have brilliant, fiery case colors that show minimal handling wear. The case colors on the forearm cap, trigger and crescent buttplate are slightly more muted than the receiver but are vivid with minimal finish wear. The highly figured, fancy grade walnut stock and forearm retain at least 95% of the original piano finish with some very minor wear at the junction of the receiver at the wrist and forearm. The stock and forearm have some insignificant handling marks. This is a magnificent example of a special order Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle.
