Rare Factory Engraved Winchester Model 1903 Deluxe Semi-Automatic Rifle Special Ordered without Loading Port on the Stock and with Factory Letter This is a very interesting and likely one-of-a-kind Model 1903 that was special ordered without the loading port in the stock or the corresponding slot in the magazine as is detailed in the included copy of the factory letter. The letter also confirms that the rifle was ordered with a Lyman peep sight, checkered pistol grip stock, that is was serial numbered on June 13, 1905, and that it was received and shipped on April 23, 1906. Though the engraving is not mentioned in the letter it matches the Style No. 8 engraved Model 1903 on page 265 of R. L. Wilson's "The Book of Winchester Engraving" and is thus clearly factory done. The rabbit scene on the right side is identical. The left side has the factory squirrel scene. There are some small flourishes of scrollwork on the breech end of the barrel. Aside from the features noted in the letter, the rifle also has a Lyman combination front sight, sporting rear sight, standard markings, and a hard rubber grip cap. The stock is fancy grade walnut with beautiful figure and a high polish "piano" finish. Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1903-rifle BBL: 20 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 22 Auto Finish: blue Grips: Serial Number: 26006 Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun Condition: Excellent with 90% plus of the bright original blue finish remains. 95% of the bright niter blue on the breechblock remains. Wear is mostly limited to near the takedown screw on the action. There is some very minor surface oxidation and brown patina. The wood is also excellent with crisp checkering, attractive figure, small dings and scratches, and nearly all of the glossy "piano" finish. Mechanically excellent. This is a beautiful example of Winchester's early 20th century engraving and among the nicest Model 1903 rifles you will ever find. The special ordered stock and magazine really set this rifle apart from other Model 1903s and gives the rifle a really sleek look. Believed to be the finest example of a Model 1903 we have ever offered at auction!
