Documented Antique Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action 45-70 Takedown Rifle with Factory Letter This is a very fine example of an antique production Winchester Model 1886 lever action rifle manufactured in 1896. This rifle is accompanied by a letter from the Winchester Arms Museum/Cody Firearms Museum Records Office, describing it as having a full octagon barrel, 45/70 caliber, plain trigger with the very desirable "takedown" feature. It has a standard straight grip walnut stock with a crescent buttplate. The letter states this rifle was shipped from the warehouse on Sept 9 1896, under order number "18585", but does not show where it was shipped. It has the all blued metal finish on the receiver, barrel and takedown mechanism, magazine assembly, forend cap, bolt, loading gate, buttplate and trigger. The hammer and loading lever are color casehardened. The barrel has a Lyman marked, bead front sight a Winchester model 42 folding/adjustable rifle rear sight. The face of the sight is marked "2-10" (200-1000 yards). The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation "45-70" is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat just ahead of the receiver. The top tang has the single line marking of "---MODEL 1886----" and the lower tang is marked with the 1884 and 1885 patent dates behind the trigger with serial number, "109371" stamped in script numerals in front of the tang screw. Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1886 BBL: 26 octagon Stock: walnut Gauge: 45-70 WCF Finish: blue Grips: Serial Number: 109371 Class: Antique Condition: Very fine with 85% of the bright original blue finish overall with some thinning and wear on the top rounded area and lower right edge of the receiver from actual use and carrying. The lever, hammer and buttplate retain 45% of their original case colors overall with the majority of the case colors on the lower sides of the hammer and front section of the loading lever The stock and forend are both in very fine condition with a nice original color overall with 80% of the original varnish with minor handling marks on the sides of the buttstock between the upper and lower tangs, with mild scratches on the sides in a couple areas. The right side of the forend also shows a slightly heavier pressure dings. A very fine Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Takedown Rifle in the desirable 45-70 WCF cartridge.
