Fine Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action 45-70 Rifle with Casehardened Frame Manufactured in 1894. Dovetailed blade front sight and folding ladder rear sight graduated to 1,000 yards and marked "1886". There is a mid-range tang mounted Lyman peep sight. The two-line address is marked on the top barrel flat ahead of the rear sight, and "45-70" is at the breech. The receiver, forend cap, buttplate and lever are casehardened. Winchester discontinued the use of casehardened frames in 1901. The barrel, full length tubular magazine, bolt and trigger are blue. 1884 and 1885 patent dates and the serial number are marked on the lower tang. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm with a steel forend cap and straight grip stock with a steel crescent buttplate. The rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum Records Office sheet which verifies the rifle configuration, caliber, octagon barrel, plain trigger, that it was received in the warehouse on May 16, 1893, and shipped to order number 7255 on January 3, 1894. The barrel retains 60% original thin blue finish, and the magazine tube has a smooth brown patina. The receiver retains 40% bright original case colors, mainly on the left side and in protected areas, with a smooth silver/gray patina on the balance. Most of the original case colors remain on the hammer and lever while the forend cap and buttplate has a smooth mottled gray patina. The wood is also fine with a few scattered minor dents, dings and handling marks. The markings are sharp. The action is excellent.
