Very Fine Documented Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Lightweight Takedown Lever Action Short Rifle in Desirable 45-70 Caliber This is a desirable example of a late production "special order" Winchester Model 1886 lightweight rifle with the takedown feature, nickel steel barrel, plain trigger, full length magazine and a shotgun butt. This rifle is accompanied by a Winchester factory letter that verifies this configuration. This rifle was manufactured and shipped in Sept 1906, then returned for repair in January 1911. This example has the fast taper, 22 inch barrel with a beaded blade front sight and the sporting, elevation adjustable rear sight. The barrel has late pattern Winchester style markings with the two-line address/patent dates on top of the barrel over the forend cap/barrel band with a single "NICKEL STEEL" marking on the left, rear side of the barrel. The breech end in front of the receiver is marked "45-70". The top of the barrel and receiver are both stamped with the "WP" Winchester proofmark inside an oval. The upper tang has the late pattern, three-line model/trademark information, and the lower tang has the serial number "137456A". The takedown lever has the 1893 patent date. It has the early style Winchester blue finish on all the metal parts with a high gloss varnish on the buttstock and forend. The shotgun style stock is fitted with a Winchester marked black rubber buttplate with molded checkering and factory logo. Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1886 BBL: 22 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 45-70 WCF Finish: blue Grips: Serial Number: 137456 Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun Condition: Very fine with 80% of the original blue finish overall with wear on the edges and high spots overall with wear and flaking of the blue on the underside of the receiver, takedown mechanism and front barrel band. The hammer and loading lever both retain 50% of their case colors with slightly more in the protected areas. The forend and buttstock are both in very fine condition with 90% of the factory varnished finish remaining overall with some minor light handling marks/pressure dents on the sides from use and handling. A really nice looking, higher condition, late production Winchester Model 1886 lever action rifle.
