Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Deluxe Takedown Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter The factory letter indicates that this rifle was received in the warehouse on September 25, 1903, and shipped in its current configuration on September 25. It was then returned for a repair on August 10, 1914. The inscription may have been added at that point. The rifle has blade and flat top adjustable sporting sights on a special order 24 inch barrel, half magazine tube, casehardened hammer and lever and otherwise a blue finish, and a multi-point checkered fancy grade forearm and semi-pistol grip stock with hard rubber shotgun buttplate and grip cap. The left side of the receiver is inscribed "T.S. Arbuthnot/Pittsburg, Pa."; the inscription has gold fill. Thomas Shaw Arbuthnot was born into a prominent family in Pittsburg in the late 19th century. He served as dean of the medical school of the University of Pittsburgh from 1909-1918, the president of the Arts Society of Pittsburgh beginning in 1932, and was an avid big game hunter. The .33 WCF was considered a good round for deer, elk, and black bear at short to medium range particularly in wooded areas prior to the debut of the more powerful .348 WCF. Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1886 BBL: 24 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 33 WCF Finish: blue Grips: Serial Number: 127440 Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun Condition: Fine with non-factory inscribed receiver.
