Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle in 45-90 Caliber with Desirable Casehardened Receiver and Factory Letter This is a very nice example of a Winchester Model 1886 Rifle manufactured in 1893. The rifle has a casehardened frame, forearm cap, hammer, lever and buttplate, and blue finish on the remaining metal parts. The barrel is equipped with dovetailed blade front and adjustable sporting rear sights. The top of the barrel is marked "MANUFACTURED BY THE/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight and "45-90 W.C.F." at the breech. The upper tang is marked "-MODEL 1886-", and the lower tang is stamped with the 1884 and 1885 patent dates in two lines behind the trigger with the serial number between the tang screws. Full length magazine tube and mounted with a nicely figured smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate. The accompanying factory letter states that the serial number was applied on June 1, 1893, and verifies the rifle configuration, 45/90 caliber, round barrel, plain trigger, that it was received in the warehouse on June 15, 1893, and shipped from the warehouse on August 7, 1893, to order number 21871. Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1886-Rifle BBL: 26 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 45-90 Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: 80739 Class: Antique Condition: Very fine. The barrel and magazine tube retain 85% plus original blue finish with some minor muzzle wear, some wear on the muzzle end of the magazine tube and a few minor scratches. The bolt retains 98% original bright blue finish. The remaining metal surfaces retain 70% original bright case colors with some thinning to a smooth gray on the underside of the receiver and lever, top of the hammer and on the edges of the buttplate. The wood is also very fine with 98% original varnish remaining and shows some scattered minor dents, dings and scratches. The markings are sharp. The action is excellent.
