Daniel Webster (1782-1852) was one of the most influential American politicians and orators of the nineteenth century. Serving as a U.S. Representative, U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, and Secretary of State under multiple presidents, Webster became famous for his defense of the Union and his powerful speeches on constitutional issues. Alongside Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun, he was considered one of the leading statesmen of the era.

William Henry Seward (1801-1872) was one of the most influential American politicians of the nineteenth century. He served as Governor of New York, United States Senator, and Secretary of State under Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. A leading opponent of the expansion of slavery, Seward became one of the most prominent voices of the emerging Republican Party before the Civil War.

As Secretary of State during the Civil War, Seward played a critical role in preserving foreign neutrality and preventing European powers from recognizing or supporting the Confederacy. His most famous achievement came in 1867 with the acquisition of Alaska from Russia, a transaction initially mocked by critics as "Seward's Folly" but later recognized as one of the most consequential land purchases in American history. Seward survived a brutal assassination attempt on the same night that President Lincoln was assassinated, further cementing his place in the dramatic history of the Civil War era.
