  • Provenance: ARTIST PROFILE: William Thomas Livesay is an American printmaker born in 1956 who trained at Yale University, where he studied under the celebrated Hungarian-American printmaker Gabor Peterdi, and was a classmate of fellow printmaker Tom Edwards. Peterdi, who became a professor at Yale in 1960, was one of the most influential printmaking teachers in the United States, known for helping generate a revival of printmaking in this country through his technical sensitivity, skill, and innovative approach to intaglio. Livesay absorbed this rigorous tradition deeply, going on to build a career centered on intaglio printmaking — a process in which images are incised into metal plates, with ink forced into the grooves and transferred to paper under press. His known body of work includes carefully observed landscape subjects such as *Large Oak Tree*, *Tree Near Cedar Lake*, *Winding River*, and *Trees Along the Field*, executed in etching editions during the early 1980s. He has lived and worked in Georgia, where his work is held in both private and public collections, including the Georgia Museum of Art. His intaglio print *Large Oak Tree* (1985) is also part of Georgia's State Art Collection. Though published information on Livesay is relatively limited compared to some of his contemporaries, his work stands as a testament to the enduring tradition of American intaglio printmaking passed down through the Yale lineage of Gabor Peterdi — a lineage that also connects him to the wider circle of late twentieth-century American printmakers trained in that distinguished program.
