Panel Scene Engraved William & John Rigby Back Action Percussion Double Rifle When founding member John Rigby died in 1818 control of John Rigby & Son passed to his son William. His second son, John Jason, joined him, and the business became William & John Rigby around 1823 until 1865 when it became John Rigby & Co. under control of William's son John. William & John Rigby advertised and displayed double rifles with back action locks and single triggers like this piece at the Great Exhibition in 1851. The rifle has a blade front sight, four leaf rear sight with platinum sight lines, "Wm & Jn Rigby Dublin" on top of the rib near the breech, platinum bands and liners on the breech plugs, fine English scroll and game scene engraving, "Wm & Jn Rigby" on the locks, sliding half-cock safeties, matching serial numbers, round patch box with patches inside, and a modern leather sling. Manufacturer: Rigby John & Co Ltd Model: SxS BBL: 29 3/8 solid rib Stock: walnut Gauge: 68 Finish: brown/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: 9349 Class: Antique Condition: Fine with most of the period refinished brown on the barrels, visible Damascus twist patterns, repaired right hammer, bright case colors at the breech, mostly gray and brown patina on the balance, and some minor pitting and spotting including patches on the barrel. The stock is also fine and has crisp checkering, some slight dings and scratches, and a repair visible at the left wedge escutcheon. Mechanically excellent.
