Biography: William Francis Taylor (1881-1963) was a Canadian-born American landscape painter associated with the New Hope School of Pennsylvania Impressionists. After studying at the Art Students League in New York under John Sloan, he worked as an advertising editor and writer before settling in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, with his artist wife, Mary Smyth Perkins. There he became closely connected with the later generation of Pennsylvania Impressionists influenced by William Lathrop and Daniel Garber. Beyond painting, Taylor played an important role in the Bucks County art community. He helped acquire Phillips Mill in New Hope as an exhibition venue for local artists, served as editor of the magazine Towpath, and wrote extensively on conservation and regional art. Although his landscapes reflected the traditions of Pennsylvania Impressionism, art historians generally regard him as more significant for his organizational, editorial, and community-building contributions than for his paintings. In 1963, he published a history of Phillips Mill, helping preserve the legacy of the New Hope art colony.
