Highly Desirable Wells Fargo Marked U.S. Smith & Wesson No. 3 Second Model Schofield Single Action Revolver Manufactured c. 1876, this is one of only 5,285 Second Model Schofield revolvers produced for the U.S. military according to Chicoine in "Smith & Wesson Six Guns of the Old West". Many of these Schofields were issued to cavalry units in the American West for use during the Indian Wars. In addition to this, after their military service was done, large numbers of these revolvers were sold as surplus to retailers in the East who often altered and refinished them for resale on the commercial market. This revolver was one of a number that was purchased as surplus when the Schofields were removed from service by Schuyler, Hartley & Graham, who shortened the barrels to approximately 5 inches before most were sold to Wells Fargo & Co. Most of these revolvers then returned to the American West in the hands of Wells Fargo express agents or anyone one else in need of a quality firearm for protection on the trails and railways of the frontier. The ejector housing on the bottom of the barrel is marked with the standard two-line address and patent dates on the left and the Schofield patent marking on the right along with "W.F.&CO.EX.3425". The "US" markings is partially retained on the heel of the butt. The rear face of the cylinder has "W" and "P" inspection/proof marks, while the bottom of the barrel is faintly marked "M". The matching serial number is marked on the butt and rear face of the cylinder. Fitted with a pinned blade front sight, grooved barrel rib, and barrel latch notch rear sight with the hollowed rear, and a pair of smooth walnut grips with a matching serial number stamped on the interior of the right panel.
