(WAR OF 1812) 'DISCOURSE DELIVERED AT TRINITY CHURCH, BOSTON...UPON THE DECLARATION OF WAR...'
Rare and desirable imprint: 'A Discourse, Delivered at Trinity Church, Boston, July 23, 1812: On the Day of Publick Fast in Massachusetts, Upon the Declaration of War Against Great-Britain' by John S. J. Gardiner, Rector of the church (Boston: Monroe & Francis), 1812. 20pp. 8vo., disbound. Fine condition. July 23, 1812 was a Massachusetts State-mandated fast day in response to the war declaration against Great Britain. The sermon expresses strong opposition to the war, highlighting the calamities it would bring upon the nation and arguing in favor of peace. An important primary source for understanding Northern, particularly Episcopalian/Federalist sentiment against the War of 1812.
