SN 5631A. Cal. 9mm. Standard configuration P38 with 5" bbl, having drift adjustable front sight and fixed rear sight. The left side of slide is marked "P.38" followed by "ac/40" in which the "40" was added underneath the "ac" followed by the full SN with letter suffix. Safety positions marked with "S" in white and "F" in red. The full serial number and letter suffix are repeated left side of frame, and under bbl, with last three digits and suffix on the locking block. The "ac" is on the left trigger guard and under the bbl lug. Usual Eagle/359 inspection markings on the slide release, hammer, and right side of slide. Mottled brown ribbed grips with the left panel having rectangular relief for lanyard loop. Each panel matched to pistol with a "631" and and Eagle/359 acceptance. Matte finished mag marked "P38." on the left side. Floorplate is from the same letter block, but mismatched with a "8459a". This exact pistol is pictured in The P.38 Pistol, Volume I, Buxton, on pg 229 where it is described as "an unusual and scarce variation". Production of this variation was just under 8,000 pistols. PROVENANCE: The Esteemed Collection Of Noted Expert And Author Warren Buxton. CONDITION: Approximately 70% orig blue with expected holster wear, spotting and graying of the lower trigger guard and front strap from extensive handling. Near excellent orig grips, and mag from the same production letter block. Bright bore with strong rifling. Perfect manual mechanics. One of the more desirable military P38s. 51568-42 LMA C&R
