Nazi-Era Walther Commercial Production Model P.38 Semi-Automatic Pistol with Holster Marked as a GI Field Capture Item from the Battle of Monte Cassino Fixed sights, with the Walther banner, two-line address and caliber markings and "Mod.P38" on the left side of the slide, "eagle/N" proofs on several components, and matching numbers on the slide (concealed by the barrel), frame, barrel and locking block. Fitted with a pair of ribbed red/brown grips and a "P.38v" marked magazine with "PFC JOE HODAL" scratched on the spine. The black leather holster, which is stamped "P38" and "DLU/1944" (Lueneschloss, Solingen) on the rear, is also hand-marked "P.F.C./JOE/HODAL/(service number)/SALERNO/ITALY CASSINO/ FEB./1944/RAPIDO/PO" on the interior. Exact identification of Hodal is unavailable, though records show a Joe Hodal (b.1916-d.2006) by that rank in the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois, and Cassino in February of 1944 would correspond with Allied combat action in the Rapido River Valley during the drive to Rome, most famously known as the Battle of Monte Cassino. The action around Monte Cassino ran from January to May of 1944, involved extremely heavy Allied casualties, and in conjunction with the amphibious landing at Anzio was critical to the progress of the war in Italy. White and maroon paint has been applied to the front and rear sights. The grips are also very fine, with some light scratches. The holster is fair, with cracking and scuffs. The decocker is a bit stiff, otherwise mechanically fine.
