W. Lamb & Son Marked Flintlock Long Rifle with Bird Patch Box This rifle is marked "W. LAMB & SON" on the top barrel flat near the breech indicating it was built in the mid-1850s by William & Henry Lamb of Jamestown, Guilford County, North Carolina. The Lambs later produced rifles for the Confederacy until their mill was burned by Pennsylvania Cavalry in 1865. Many of their earlier rifles were likely also carried off to war by Confederate troops. The rifle has a Ketland & Co. lock, standard blade and notch sights, double set triggers, and somewhat crude accents. Manufacturer: American Model: Flintlock BBL: 40 inch octagon Stock: walnut Gauge: 38 Finish: blue Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Fair as converted and refinished. Given the date of manufacture, this rifle was most likely originally percussion and was converted to flintlock in the 20th century rather than being a reconversion. The refinished barrel has a blend of blue finish and dark patina. There is heavy flash wear at the breech. The lock has been filed and has dark patina. Both the lock and barrel have oxidation. The furniture has aged patina. The stock is fair with crude spliced repairs on the left side of the forend, mild cracks at some edges, light sanding, stained finish, and mild wear throughout, especially at the edges. Mechanically good. The markings are faint.
