W. H. Harkness, 1906, Marine School, Oil on canvas, Marine ship portrait, The steam ship 'S. S. Parkgate', 1906, Signed lower left. 17 x 24 1/2'' Built in 1906, she was a 3232 ton steamer built by R. Craggs & Sons, Ltd., Middlesbrough and operated by Parkgate SS. Co., Ltd. (Turnbull, Scott & Co.), she was mined in 1916 by the Germans and beached at Mucking Flat but refloated and returned to service where she was attacked by gunnery 80 miles NE of Cap de Fer, Malta, vessel captured after an hour and 15 minute exchange, then sunk by gunnery and scuttling charge in 1917
