William Calderwood Engraved and Silver Accented Pennsylvania Flintlock Long Rifle William Calderwood (1780/85-1860) was born in Ireland and lived in Bucks County starting around 1808 and moved to Germantown Road in Philadelphia in 1813. In 1818 to 1820 he was located on Liberty Street in Pittsburgh and moved to in Mahoning Township in 1840 and then to Union Township in 1850. He manufactured 60 pairs of Model 1807 pistols for Tench Coxe, Purveyor of Public Supplies, in 1808. The rifle has traditional blade and notch sights, "W. CALDERWOOD" stamped on top behind the rear sight in small letters, silver wedge escutcheons and dual incised lines on the forend, "WARRANTED" marked lock with simple engraving, double set triggers, checkered wrist with a silver plate, engraved patch box with small release button on the toe plate, engraved and pierced comb plate, and silver diamond and moon inlays flanking a round plate with an embossed running buck on the cheek rest. The shortened barrel has a blend of applied blue finish and brown patina, tool marks, and mild edge wear. The upper tang is mostly bright. The lock was also blued and has minor pitting. The brass has attractive mild aged patina, and the silver had dark, bluish aged patina. The refinished stock has a stabilized break at the toe, bent toe plate, cracks around the lock, small tension crack on the left flat, and nice flame figure.
