Vincent Van Gogh (Attributed*) (1853-1890): Tree Study, signed Vincent, and Landscape with Haystack, unsigned, pen and ink drawings on both sides of a single sketchbook page. Unframed.

This page was removed from a cardboard and linen sketchbook measuring approximately 6 x 9 inches, and formerly containing 11 sheets of drawings and sketches Attributed* to Vincent van Gogh.

The exposed cardboard front cover of the sketchbook is inscribed in Dutch: "Sommige kleine tekeningen van Vincent van Gogh. Uit de collective van mijn grootvader." [Some small drawings by Vincent van Gogh. From the collection of my grandfather.] The cover is signed S. James van den Bergh. The style of the cover's pencil inscription is consistent with its age.

A photo of the sketchbook cover is part of this listing, for reference, but the cover is not included with the lot.

The two drawings on this page show the mature drawing style of Vincent Van Gogh. They are dominated by the easy-flowing rhythm for which his drawings are prized. It is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity/attribution by painting conservator/art historian Bruce Wood, MFA.

The drawing on the front of this sketchbook page directly relates to, and is a possible study for the front tree in Vincent van Gogh drawing Cypresses, 1889, in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, and also his oil on canvas painting Cypresses with Two Female Figures, Saint-Rémy, France, 1889, in the collection of the Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo, The Netherlands. The drawing on the back side directly relates to the composition of the Vincent van Gogh's 1890 brown watercolour drawing Wheat Field with a Stack of Wheat or Hay, in the collection of the Whitworth Art Gallery of the University of Manchester, England, and also his 1890 oil on canvas painting Field with Wheat Stacks, owned by the Foundation Beyeler in Reichen/Basel, Switzerland. Both works were created in Auvers-sur-Oise, France.

Reference photos of these works are included in the catalog listing, but are not part of the sale.
