Very Fine Colt Model 1878 Damascus Barrel Side by Side Hammer Shotgun Manufactured in 1881 and has brown bold twist Damascus pattern barrels with a smooth concave solid rib marked with the one line Hartford address and fitted with a single bead front sight. The casehardened action is marked "Colt's Pt. F.A. Mfg. Co." on each side with simple line bordering. There is also simple line engraving on the forearm hardware, break lever, and trigger guard. It is mounted with a checkered walnut forearm with ebony forend insert and a round knob pistol grip stock with a silver initial oval and smooth steel buttplate. 2 3/4 inch chambers, choked modified/modified with an extractor. Additional barrel and stock measurements are: bore diameter at 9 inches from breech .740/.737 inches; wall thickness at 9 inches from breech .08/.081 inches; drop at comb 2 1/8 inches; drop at heel 3 3/4 inches; and the length of pull is 13 3/4 inches. The barrels retain 90% plus original brown finish with some muzzle and edge wear, and showing all of the Damascus pattern. The trigger guard retains 40% original thin blue finish with areas of smooth gray and brown patina. The break lever retains 90% original blue finish with minor spotting. The right lock retains 60% original bright case colors and the left lock retains 50% original bright case colors. The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth mottled gray patina. The wood is fine with scattered minor dings, dents and scratches, and crisp checkering. The markings are crisp and clear. Mechanically excellent.
