Very Fine Civil War U.S. Martially Inspected Starr Model 1858 Army Double Action Percussion Revolver Manufactured c. 1858-1863, approximately 21,000 Starr Model 1858 revolvers were acquired by the United States during the Civil War, most commonly associated with Midwestern cavalry units. Somewhat atypical for the day, the Starr used a double trigger mechanism, with the front trigger cocking the hammer and advancing the cylinder while the rear trigger fires the weapon; depending on the setting of a restrictor block on the front trigger, the shooter could either pop off quick double action style shots, or cock the hammer single action style. This mechanism would be retired with the Starr Model 1863, which used a more conventional single action mechanism. Dovetailed blade front and hammer notch rear sights, with the New York address on the left side of the frame, patent marks on the right, and matching numbers on the barrel, barrel lug, cylinder, frame, and trigger. The smooth pistol grip is marked with three cartouches, "ESA" on the left, "JSD" and "CSL" on the right.
