USS TRENTON DIARY
A hardbound diary, 7 x 8.5 in. with lined pages, 28pp. filled out by Frank H. Bailey, an Assistant Engineer on the USS TRENTON stationed in Villefranche-sur-Mer, France, January-May, 1887. Neatly penned, Bailey records his activities day-by-day, ranging from one liners such as ‘on duty' to more lengthy descriptions of the ship's travels and his shore excursions. The diary also contains 15pp. of expenses and other accounting in pencil. Overall very good condition. The USS TRENTON was a wood-hulled screw frigate and principally remembered for being the first U.S. Navy ship equipped with electric lights. In the latter half of 1887, she was actively serving as the flagship of the U.S. Navy's Asiatic Station and was, two years later wrecked in a hurricane in Samoa in 1889. For himself, Bailey would rise to the rank of Lieutenant Commander, March 1899.
