Title: Manassas: A Novel of the War
Author: Upton Sinclair - Upton Beall Sinclair Jr. was an American author and one-time candidate for governor of California who wrote close to one hundred books in many genres. He achieved popularity in the first half of the twentieth century, acquiring particular fame for his classic muckraking novel, "The Jungle" (1906). It exposed conditions in the U.S. meat packing industry, causing a public uproar that contributed in part to the passage a few months later of the 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act.

Condition / Notes: This is a scarce author-signed 1923 self-published edition of this novel, the first of an intended Civil War trilogy (the subsequent volumes were never completed). The inscription on the front flyleaf reads "To L. T. Goble / with best wishes / Upton Sinclair / Jan 31 1924."

This antique volume is bound in red cloth, with stamped gilt lettering to the spine and stamped black lettering to the front cover. The book shows moderate shelfwear, with darkening to the spine and light soiling to the covers. The binding is sound. Goble's pictorial bookplate appears on the front flyleaf. The pages are clean and without markings.

This book is from the library of Leroy Truman Goble, a minor figure in the Chicago literary renaissance of the 1920's. Goble was friendly with the likes of Sherwood Anderson and Ben Hecht. He was also a photographer and artist, although he seems to have worked in the fledgling advertising in Chicago during that time.
