Civil War

The naval scene depicting wounded and heroic sailors defending their ship, pages of a bi-fold, 5.25” x 8.25”; Camp Stoneman, Washington, D.C.; November 21, 1863. The first page of the bifold features a song titled “The Flag of our Union”, four verses, beneath a four-color engraving of a dramatic scene aboard a ship. Published and sold by Charles Magnus, New York. Some wear to mail folds, with soiling to top page. Interior pages remain very clean.

Written entirely in cipher by Smith D. King, who identifies himself at the end as a member of the “ Band 1st brigade, 2nd Div. Cav.” We are unable to provide information regarding content of the letter as it is entirely in cipher, but we were able to locate Smith D. King in both the National Parks Service website and the American Civil War database. King was enlisted as a musician third class at the time this letter was written. King is possibly black, as he later enlists as a lieutenant in the 41 st United States Colored Troops.
