(UNION NAVY) NAVAL OFFICERS' CARTE DE VISITE PHOTOGRAPHS (4)
A fine lot of four Civil War-era carte de visite photographs, all portraits of U.S. Navy officers, includes: a full-length view of future Rear Admiral THOMAS H. PATTERSON (1820-1889), 2.25 x 4 in. sepia, showing him in uniform and taken circa 1862. The photographer's stamp ‘Brady New York' appears at the bottom edge of the recto, while the verso bears the backstamp of Brady's National Photographic Portrait Galleries of New York. The bottom right corner of the photographic print is slightly detached from the card, and the verso shows a pencil identifying inscription, else very good. WITH: a Civil War-era, full-length view in uniform of future Rear Admiral HENRY F. PICKING (1840-1899), 2.5 x 3.75 in. sepia, likely as commander of the monitor USS NAHANT. The photographer's stamp ‘Brady Washington' appears at the bottom edge of the recto, while Picking signs in black ink on the verso (no backstamp). Shows a pencil identifying inscription to the verso, with minor bumps to the corners, else very good. WITH: a war-date, full-length view in uniform of Lt. Commander ALLEN V. REED (1838-1917), 2.5 x 4 in. sepia, with ‘Wyman, Photographer Rockport, N. Y.' backstamp, also signed by him on the verso in black ink, adding his rank ‘Lieut U. S. N.' and the date ‘Decr 1863.' Shows minor bumps to the corners, else very good. WITH: a Civil War-era, three-fourths length view in uniform of surgeon HENRY C. NELSON, 2.25 x 3.75 in. sepia, no backstamp, with a possible faint signature in pencil beneath the image and a signature with rank and sentiment in black ink on the verso. Shows some spotting, else very good.
