Desirable U.S. Test Trials DWM Model 1900 American Eagle Luger Semi-Automatic Pistol One of 1,000 Model 1900 Luger semi-automatic pistols ordered by the U.S. Ordnance Board from the German Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) firm c. April 1900 and delivered in two shipments with 800 sent on October 26, 1901, and the remaining 200 sent on October 29, 1901. While this specific pistol's serial number is not listed, it falls well within the known serial range and in-between known examples listed by serial numbers on page 387 of "U.S. Military Automatic Pistols 1894-1920" by Meadows. The most distinguishing features noted on these pistols versus other commercial Model 1900 "American eagle" Lugers were the lack of German proofs or export markings and the partial serial number on the takedown lever was placed on the right side. While the Model 1900 Luger had a number of virtues and performed favorably during testing, it was passed over by U.S. Ordnance in favor of domestically produced designs. After the tests were complete, the surviving examples of the 1,000 test Lugers were surplussed out of U.S. Ordnance inventory and released for public sale through Francis Bannerman. Features fixed blade front and notch rear sights, the "Great Seal of the United States" on top of the barrel extension, the script "DWM" manufacturer monogram marked on top of the toggle link, and early Model 1900 Luger features including a wide trigger guard, dished toggles with a toggle lock, a flat recoil spring, and the lower safety position of the frame unmarked. Matching full serial number on the frame and barrel, along with matching partial serial numbers visible on small parts including the extension. Fitted with a pair of checkered walnut grips and a nickel plated magazine with a small "ordnance bomb" style proof on the walnut base.
