U.S. Springfield Model 1903A1 National Match Rifle Model 1903A1 National Match (NM) rifle manufactured by Springfield Armory c. 1937. The rifle has the distinctive "C" stock with pistol grip and is fitted with a Lyman 48 micrometer rear sight. The rifle has the standard NM features which include: (1) polished bolt, receiver side rails, and follower top, (2) selected star gauged barrel stamped with a star gauge mark on the muzzle and a star gauge number "C/2118" on the top beneath the handguard, (3) rifle serial number "1498108" electro-penciled on the top of the bolt and stamped on the underside of the stock above the lower sling swivel. The stock has the coarse checkered buttplate found on most late production M1903 rifles and all M1903A1 NM rifles. The barrel is roll-stamped: "S A/Ordnance 'Shell & Flame' insignia/3-37" behind the rear sight and has a "P" stamped on the barrel just ahead of the handguard. The face of the front sight base has matching alignment marks. The receiver is roll-stamped with the standard four-line Springfield markings and the serial number "1498108". The bolt is stamped "NS" on the top of the handle and has factory polishing marks above the safety lug. The extractor, sear and cocking piece all have the "CV" (chrome-vanadium steel) marking introduced c. 1936. The top of the handguard is stamped with the drawing number "D28179" and the underside of the stock is marked with the drawing number "D1836". Drawing numbers are present on the rear sight base, cocking piece, butt trap door, front sight base, stock reinforcing bolts and cut-off. The left side of the stock is stamped with the "SA/SPG" final inspection mark. An encircled, block "P" proofmark is stamped on the inside of the pistol grip. The rear sight leaf has a polished face and lacks the 2800 yard center notch. The sight has the early dished windage knob and binding screw. All of the components of the Lyman 48 sight have matching serial numbers. The receiver has the large additional "Hatcher Hole" on the left side and the bolt has two gas ports. The barrel, upper barrel band, rear sight base, receiver, trigger guard, floor plate, and buttplate have the dark Springfield Armory parkerized finish. The bolt sleeve is blued and the "ON" face of the magazine cut-off is polished bright. The walnut stock and handguard are oil finished. The rifle is complete with a pre-WWII M1907 russet leather sling, brass P.J. O'Hare muzzle cover and parkerized O'Hare rear sight cover. Manufacturer: Springfield Armory U.S. Model: 1903A1 BBL: 24 inch Stock: walnut Gauge: 30 06 Finish: parkerized Grips: Serial Number: 1498108 Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun Condition: Very fine. The rifle retains 85% plus of the original parkerized finish with minor edge wear. The refinished stock and forearm are both in very fine condition with crisp inspection and proofmarks. Wear is limited to very minor handling marks. The receiver sight is probably a period addition but the stock inlet is expertly done and equal to armory work. The rear sight is a period replacement; (rear sights were typically removed when Lyman 48 sights were utilized on the rifle). This is a good looking, original, late production Springfield M1903A1 NM rifle with matching serial numbers on the bolt and stock. The M1903A1 NM rifles were probably one of the most accurate military rifles ever manufactured.
