San Francisco Police Marked U.S. Smith & Wesson Second Model Schofield Single Action Revolver with U.S. Holster Manufactured for the U.S. military circa 1876-77 with a total production of approximately 5,934. This revolver was issued to the San Francisco Police Department by Benecia Arsenal and marked "131 at top of back strap. It has the two-line address/patent dates on the left side of the ejector housing flanked by elongated Maltese crosses and with the one-line Schofield patent dates on the right side of the ejector housing. The rear cylinder face is stamped with the matching serial number and Ordnance sub-inspector's "P" and "E," which are also marked on the bottom flat of the ejector housing. The left grip panel is dated "1877" over an Ordnance inspector's script initials cartouche "DAL." The right panel has a "CW" cartouche. The right grip panel is numbered to the gun. Comes with a U.S. Model 1881 holster period modified to be used with the Mills web belt. According to the consignor, "This holster was found in San Antonio and was formerly in the Peter Steins collection. Many Schofield revolvers were issued to the 4th Cavalry which saw service in the Geronimo Campaign, the famous 9th and 10th U.S. Cavalry comprised of the "Buffalo Soldiers" stationed in the American Southwest and famous people such as the James Brothers, Cole Younger, U.S. Marshall Bill Tilghman and Chief Scout for Custer "Lonesome Charley" Reynolds were known to carry Schofield revolvers. The revolver retains 30% original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown-gray patina. The grips are also fine with some minor dings and scratches. The cartouches are legible. Mechanically excellent. The holster is good with overall flex wear and some flaking. The stitching is tight.
