U.S. Remington Type II Split Breech Rolling Block Carbine These early Remington rolling blocks were manufactured by Savage Revolving Arms Co. for Remington. Only 15,000 were ordered. They were Remington's first long guns chambered for metallic cartridges and paved the way for the widely used No. 1 rolling block series. They were delivered too late to see use in the Civil War and were promptly repurchased by Remington and then sold to France for use in the Franco-Prussian War. This example has a swirl stamp on the top of the receiver. This marking has been found on other arms including Winchesters from the period and is not fully understood. The stock has two U.S. inspector's cartouches on the left side and an intertwined proof on the right side. The barrel has the standard blade, notch, and folding leaf sights. Manufacturer: E. Remington & Sons Model: Split Breech BBL: 20 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 50 RF Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: 9347 Class: Antique Condition: Very good. The receiver retains traces of original case colors with the balance mostly a dark silver-gray. The balance metal surfaces primarily display deep brown patina. The wood is very good and has dings, nicks, and scrapes typical of a weapon that has seen use in battle. The cartouches are both clearly legible. Mechanically fine. The markings are mostly clear throughout.
