U.S. M1 FIXED-BALE HELMET WITH ST. CLAIR ‘LOW PRESSURE' LINER
A fine, early example of a U.S. M1 steel combat helmet, the exterior finished olive-green with a corked texture, featuring a stainless steel rim with seam at the front. The chin strap bales are fixed, and secure a chin strap with first-type brass adjustment buckle. The interior is finished olive green, and the heat-stamped batch number ‘429' is visible inside the front skirt. The helmet is fitted with a scarce, early ‘low pressure' liner manufactured by St. Clair, marked with the initials ‘S C' in yellow within the crown. The suspension is white rayon, secured inside the liner with bright steel rounded rectangular bars, and fitted with slightly later but still period-correct herringbone twill sweatband and nape strap. The liner retains its original brown leather chin strap. The stenciled initials ‘J B' followed by an indistinct number sequence are visible inside the front visor. The interior of the liner shows expected wear commensurate with use, and the helmet shell shows a few negligible scuffs and scratches to the exterior, otherwise in very good overall condition.
