U.S. Army Trials Remington-Lee Model 1882 Bolt Action Rifle This is a fine example of a Remington-Lee U.S. Army Trials Model 1882 bolt action Rifle. Observed trials rifle serial numbers range from 8,818 to 9,791. It has the early production receiver markings. The left receiver wall is marked "REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, N.Y. U.S.A./SOLE MANUFACTURERS AND AGENTS/US," and the upper left receiver flat is marked "THE LEE ARMS BRIDGEPORT, USA/PATENTED NOV. 4TH 1879" followed by the serial number. Army Lt. David F. Clark "DFC" inspector mark appears on the right receiver wall and on the left barrel flat. The left side of the barrel at the breech is stamped "US/V/P". "U" marked barrel bands with the front band having stacking and sling swivels. Rear sight has a "R L" (Rifle Lee) marked base which is graduated to 500 yards and a leaf graduated to 1,200 yards. Smooth straight grip stock with crescent buttplate, "P/DFC" stamped behind the trigger guard, a faint cartouche on the right side of the buttstock, and "F/40" stamped in large font on the left side of the buttstock which are markings usually associated with Massachusetts Naval Brigade service after the U.S. Army Trials. The buttplate tang is stamped "US". The magazine has two grooves. Manufacturer: Remington Arms Inc Model: 1882 BBL: 32 1/2 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 45-70 Government Finish: blue Grips: Serial Number: 9426 Class: Antique Condition: Fine. The rifle retains 60% original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. The lightly sanded, reoiled stock is very good with a thumb print size shallow dent on the wrist and some minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent.
