U.S. Springfield Trapdoor 1881 Forager Shotgun Only an estimated 1,376 Trapdoor 20 gauge "forager" shotguns were manufactured in the early 1880s. They were designed for 20 gauge brass shotgun shells and were used by hunters and scouts primarily at western outposts in the late 19th century. Some were even used into the very early 20th century. This conversion was done by shortening a surplus Civil War rifle-musket barrel to 26 inches, reaming it out to 20 gauge, and fitting it with a post front sight. The stock and most of the hardware are also surplus Civil War rifle-musket components. The forend was cut down, had the ramrod channel filled, and was secured to the barrel by an additional screw and corresponding nut. There is a faint trace of the inspector's cartouche on the left side above the trigger. The lock has the correct two-click tumbler and standard Springfield markings. The breechblock is the Model 1879 type and has "1881" in italics on top and a special extractor. The rear of the chamber has the low serial number "330." It has a carbine buttplate and trigger guard. Manufacturer: Springfield Armory U.S. Model: 1881 BBL: 26 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 20 Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: 330 Class: Antique Condition: Fair with mottled gray and brown patina throughout as well as areas of mild oxidation and pitting. The stock is fine and has been lightly sanded and re-oiled. There are some minor cracks at the tail of the lock, a section of the ramrod channel dowel absent, and various dings and scratches. The top of the wrist has numerous small dents giving it a textured feel. Mechanically fine.
