Scarce U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1898 Krag Bolt Action Carbine Only 5,000 Model 1898 carbines were manufactured by Springfield Armory. The serial number range for Model 1898 Carbines falls within the Model 1898 Rifle range. Observed carbine serial numbers range from 118,894 to 134,256. This carbine is in the middle of the known Model 1898 Carbine serial number range. Nearly all of the Model 1898 carbines were refurbished by the Ordnance Department. This carbine has the standard arsenal up-grades: (1) replacement M1899 pattern stock with longer forearm and no provision for sling bar, (2) Model 1902 Carbine tangent rear sight and (3) Model 1998 Rifle pattern handguard without sight protector hump. The left side of the receiver is marked: "U.S./MODEL 1898./ SPRINGFIELD ARMORY./126370" in two lines. The left stock wrist is stamped with the block initials "J.S.A." in a rectangle (this late style inspection mark indicates that the carbine was probably upgraded at Springfield Armory after 1906). A circled, script "P" proofmark is stamped behind the trigger guard. The right side of the rear sight base is marked with a "C" indicating the sight is a Model 1902 Carbine pattern rear sight. The butt trap contains a three-piece cleaning rod and nickel-plated oiler. This carbine was formerly in the collection of the noted Krag expert and author Franklin Mallory. Manufacturer: Springfield Armory U.S. Model: 1898 Carbine BBL: 22 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 30-40 Krag Finish: blue Grips: Serial Number: 126370 Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun Condition: Very good plus. The barrel, trigger guard and buttplate retain close to 30% of the original blue finish. The receiver, side plate and loading gate have mostly mottled casehardened finish. The extractor has most of the blue finish and the bolt has some minor age discoloration. The stock is in very fine-excellent condition with light handling and storage wear. All of the markings are sharp. M1898 Carbines are scarce in any condition; this is a scarce Krag carbine in one of the three known Model 1898 Carbine configurations listed by LTC William Brophy on page 66 of "The Krag Rifle."
