Scarce U.S. Navy Second Model Winchester-Hotchkiss Bolt Action Rifle A total of 999 Second Model rifles were manufactured for the U.S. Navy in 1881-82. The rifle has a blued barrel, receiver, and trigger guard. The bolt is bright, and the walnut stock is oil finished. The safety is located on the top of the receiver, and the barrel is fitted with a Buffington rear sight. The left side of the receiver is marked "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A." over the patent dates in three lines. The upper left side of the receiver is stamped with the serial number "4608" followed by the Ordnance inspector's initials "HN." "HN." is also stamped on the bolt handle and lug. The barrel is stamped with Springfield Armory "V/P/eagle head" proof and inspection marks parallel to the bore and has U.S. Navy "US/anchor" inspection markings stamped perpendicular to the bore. The same area is also marked with "WWK", "R", and "H.N." inspector and sub-inspector markings. A rack number "I9" is stamped on the stock comb just ahead of the buttplate. Manufacturer: Winchester Model: Hotchkiss BBL: 28 3/4 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 45-70 Government Finish: blue Grips: Serial Number: 4608 Class: Antique Condition: Fine. The 30% of the thinned original blue finish remains with moderate handling wear and a dark aged patina. The barrel, receiver, and bolt markings are crisp. The stock has been re-oiled but is in fine condition with scattered handling marks. There is an old, professional repair on the upper stock wrist behind the receiver tang. It is mechanically fine and has crisp markings. This is a fine example of a scarce U.S. Navy Second Model Winchester-Hotchkiss bolt action rifle.
