American Civil War/Franco-Prussian War Martially Inspected Remington Type II "Split Breech" Carbine The "Split Breech Carbines" were manufactured for Remington under a sub-contract with Savage Revolving Arms Company and were the first Remington long guns to use metallic cartridges and the last contract arms supplied to the U.S. Government at the conclusion of the Civil War. These carbines were manufactured circa 1865-1866 and were first delivered five months after the conclusion of the Civil War. Remington repurchased most of these carbines from the government and sold them to the French government for use in the Franco-Prussian War. This example has standard U.S. contract markings and features as well as a European marking and "SJC/30" on the right side of the butt.
