U.S. Colt Single Action Cavalry Model Revolver with Factory Letter This Colt Single Action Cavalry Model revolver manufactured in 1890 as part of the 12th government contract for 2,000 Single Action revolvers issued on November 12, 1889. This revolver was inspected by Captain Stanhope E. Blunt (SEB) and sub-inspected by Rinaldo A. Carr (RAC). The revolver has the Colt commercial blue finish on the barrel, ejector housing, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap. The Colt commercial blue finish was utilized on the very late production Cavalry model revolvers. The frame, hammer and loading gate are color casehardened. The one-piece walnut grip is oil finished. The revolver has the late oval ejector rod head introduced about serial number 113000. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the "Elongated Block Letter" address: "COLT'S PT. F. A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the "three-date/three-line" patent marking used until about serial number 134300. The "U.S." property mark is stamped on the left side of the frame behind the patent dates. The full serial number, "133879", is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "3879" is stamped on the barrel beneath the ejector housing and on the side of the cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match. The inside of the loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "1637". "P" proofmarks are stamped on the underside of the barrel and on the side of the cylinder. The small, block-letter, "R.A.C." sub-inspection mark is stamped: (1) on the underside of the barrel, (2) bottom of the frame above the serial number, (3) side of the cylinder and (4) left grip heel. The lower left side of the grip is stamped with the date "1890" above the script "SEB" final inspection mark. The lower right side of the grip is stamped with a script "RAC" sub-inspection mark. Colt "K" sub-inspection marks are stamped below the serial number on the trigger guard and back strap and below the ejector housing boss on the barrel. This revolver is accompanied by a Colt factory letter that states it was delivered to the "U.S. Government Inspector" at the Colt plant on July 3, 1890, as part of a lot of 150 revolvers. Manufacturer: Colt Model: Single Action Army BBL: 7 1/2 inch round Stock: Gauge: 45 Long Colt Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: walnut Serial Number: 133879 Class: Antique Condition: Fine. This revolver retains 60% plus of the blue finish. Wear on the barrel and ejector housing is limited to some finish loss on the muzzle and leading edges of the ejector housing. Nearly all of the blue finish is present on the trigger guard and renumbered to match back strap. Most of the finish wear is concentrated on the cylinder which has finish loss on the edges of the front and flutes and significant drag marks between the cylinder stops. The frame, hammer and loading gate have 70% of the color casehardened finish. All of the Colt and Ordnance markings are crisp. The cylinder drags, and the hammer will not hold at half-cock. The grips were lightly cleaned long ago but remain in very fine to excellent condition with extremely sharp professionally remarked "1890" date and "SEB" and "RAC" final inspection and sub-inspection marks. This is an excellent example of one of the final U.S. contract Colt Single Action Cavalry Model revolvers.
