TWO RARE NAPOLEONIC PRISONER-OF-WAR FORGED BANKNOTES
Circa 1811-1814
A Bank of Scotland one guinea note dated August 1, 1812 and a Bank of Scotland one pound note dated October 11, 1810, produced by French prisoners at the Valleyfield depot in Scotland. Both with a handwritten payee of "Geo [?]andy" and the forged signatures of the bank directors. Stamped with the seal of the bank, which would have been carved from stockyard bones. Housed together in a common frame.

  • Provenance:
The Lloyd Collection of Napoleonic Prisoner-of-War Artifacts (retains collection sticker).

    Reference:
Illustrated in The Lloyd Collection of Napoleonic Prisoner-of-War Artifacts presented by John F. Rinaldi Nautical Antiques, Kennebunkport, Maine, 1986, numbers 102 and 103. Rinaldi notes capital punishment for forgery wasn't abolished until 1832, so producing these types of notes could cost a prisoner his life if found and convicted.
  • Dimensions: Notes approx. 4.75" x 5.5". Framed 11.25" x 15".
  • Condition: Tears, staining and creasing, as would be expected given the age, material and nature of the item. Not examined out of frame.

The absence of a condition report does not imply an object is free of defects. All items may have normal signs of age and wear commensurate with their age; these issues will likely not be mentioned in the condition report. Please contact Eldred's before the auction with any condition questions. Questions about condition will not be answered after purchase. Condition reports are provided as a courtesy, and we are not responsible for any errors or omissions. Important note on frames: Frames are not guaranteed to be in the same condition as they are in the item photograph. Due to handling and shipping, many frames, especially antique ones, are prone to losses. If you have questions about the condition of a frame, please contact us prior to the auction.
