Pre-Columbian, Panama, Gran Cocle, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. A globular effigy jar decorated with a bold band of painted concentric circle motifs around the shoulder, with applied nubbin projections representing the head, feet, and tail of a turtle - an animal of deep cosmological significance in Cocle iconography. Accompanying it is a wide shallow dish on a low ring foot, its interior finished in burnished red slip while the exterior carries alternating registers of red and black geometric ornament. Size of turtle pot: 6.5" D x 4" H (16.5 cm D x 10.2 cm H)

Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection, ex-collection of Y. Kayvan, Los Angeles, California, USA 2025, acquired from Barakat Gallery, Beverly Hills, CA, acquired between 1985 and 2003

  • Condition: Both are repaired from many large pieces. Cocle pot has gaps and wide fissures between pieces, with losses to material. Larger bowl has infill and overpainting along breaklines.
