Two Early Confederate Bonds Both the $50 and $100 bonds were redeemable in twelve months indicating the naïve belief in 1861 that the Civil War would be quickly resolved. Later bonds were designed to not be redeemable until after a southern victory and the ratification of a peace treaty. Both bonds have southern scenes, classical goddesses, and the $50 bond includes a portrait of George Washington, easily the most popular American hero from the South.
