Two 19th century letters: 1819 from James Nicholson in Edinburgh to his Father, also James, Schoolmaster, Craig, Montrose, describing his and his brother's journey from Galloway by mail coach, their arrival in Edinburgh and how an indisposition of health was dealt with; the second letter, dated 1841, from Ross Nicholson at Camp Whittle Hill (20 miles north of Manchester) to his sister, giving an account of life as a military surveyor working for the Ordnance Survey in the borders. Note: by family tradition, James Nicholson, the recipient of the earlier letter, was the founder of the Scottish education system
