East Asia, Tibet, ca. 1800–1920 CE. A high-shouldered ewer cast from sterling-grade silver (97% silver purity), its body holds two large pale celadon nephrite jade plaques carved in low relief with figural and landscape scenes. The metal is worked in repousse and chased detail: sinuous dragons chase across the shoulder, a foliate dragon writhes along the spout, and a scrolled handle, mounted with an openwork carved jade plaque, arches dramatically to meet the neck. The tiered domed lid is crowned by a carved jade bird finial. Cabochons of polished coral and turquoise, set in beaded silver mounts, punctuate the neck, the diamond-form spout collar, and the ringed foot, joined by petal-form inlays of lapis lazuli and turquoise. Size: 10" W x 17.5" H x 5" D (25.4 cm W x 44.5 cm H x 12.7 cm D); silver quality: 97%; weight: 4.2 kg.

Such ornate vessels, marrying Chinese jade carving with Himalayan metalwork and stone inlay, were prestige objects made for ceremonial pouring and elite display along the Sino-Tibetan cultural corridor. This is a lovely antique example!

Provenance: ex-David Zahler collection, acquired between 1975-2005
