North America, United States, Kansas, Western Interior Seaway, Late Cretaceous period, circa 87 to 82 million years ago. A group of three fossilized mosasaur vertebrae in dense mineralized bone, each showing the characteristic spool-shaped form with worn articular faces and remnants of neural arch structures. Mosasaurs were large marine reptiles adapted for life in the sea, distant relatives of modern lizards and snakes rather than dinosaurs. The specimens originate from the Niobrara Formation. Size: 4.6" L x 1.75" W (11.7 cm x 4.4 cm); 5.5" H (14 cm) on included custom stand.
