Ghana. Each carved from pale hardwood with the characteristic elongated trapezoidal head, these with a central protuberance on top. The two larger figures are embellished with engraved and pyro-engraved geometric decoration along the back and sides of the head. The medium-sized doll is adorned with red glass beads and retains blackened detailing on the face together with scarification motifs on the torso. The smallest figure is more austere in form, with a plain facial plane and traces of kaolin-painted decoration. All three figures exhibit a weathered patina with evidence of prolonged handling and surface wear, reflecting their traditional use as fertility figures. 9" H to 11.5" H (22.86 cm H to 29.21 cm H).

Provenance: Long Island, N.Y. collection. Ex. collection of Nancy and John Hyde Devoe, NYC. and N.J., active 1950’s - 1970’s.
