Author: Thomas Willing Balch - Thomas Balch was an American historian, best known for his work on the American Revolutionary War, originally written in French and later translated into English as "The French in America during the War of Independence of the United States, 1777-1783."
He was married to Emily Swift Balch (1832-1917) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mrs. Balch was a member of the Acorn Club of Philadelphia, and the Colonial Dames of America.
Thomas Balch has been called the "father of international arbitration" for his work in popularizing this peaceful mechanism of international dispute resolution

Condition / Notes: This is a scarce author-signed first edition. The Inscription on cards attached to the front pastedown reads as follows: "April 2nd, 1902 / Dear Sir: / I take pleasure in / sending you a copy / of The Alasko-Canadian / Frontier / (illegible word) / (illegible words) / Thomas Willing Balch." The address "1412 Spruce Street / Philadelphia" appears printed at the top of the first card. The name of the previous owner and address are written along the bottom edge of the front pastedown.

This antique volume is bound in red cloth, with bright stamped gilt lettering to the spine and front cover. The book shows moderate external wear, with light soiling to the covers. The binding is firm. The striking armorial plate of Elisha Rhodes Brown appears at the top of the front pastedown. The pages are clean and bright. This work contains 8 full-page maps.
