ARTIST PROFILE: Thomas Lound (13 July 1801 – 18 January 1861) was an amateur English landscape painter and etcher born in Beeston St Andrew, Norfolk, and a proud member of the Norwich School of painters. Born into a wealthy brewing family, Lound was affluent enough to pursue his passion for art while maintaining a comfortable livelihood — working for 35 years as a manager at Charles Tompson & Sons brewery in Norwich, and also serving as an agent for the County Fire and Provident Life Offices. He began painting by copying works of prominent Norwich School artists, including John Crome and John Sell Cotman, under whom he is believed to have studied. He became a member of the Norwich Society of Artists at the age of 18, and went on to exhibit in both Norwich and London, showing pictures at the British Institution and the Royal Academy of Arts. Though he specialised in views of his native Norfolk, surviving sketchbooks reveal that he also traveled to Wales and Yorkshire on sketching tours. Between 1832 and 1834 he produced etchings of river views, favoring riverside scenes and architectural detail. He helped form the Norfolk and Norwich Art Union and served for a time as its President. Well-liked among his contemporaries, he was close friends with Norwich artists Robert Leman, Henry Bright, and John Middleton, and was an avid collector of art, particularly admiring the work of Norwich painter John Thirtle. Throughout his life he suffered from ill health, and died suddenly of apoplexy at the age of 59, a year after the deaths of his wife and son. Today, he is considered by art historians to rank among the finest watercolourists of the Norwich School.
