Thomas Edison TLS Reminiscing on Early Days in Newark
TLS

A typed letter from Thomas Edison on desirable Laboratory letterhead, signed "Thos. A. Edison" at conclusion with his classic umbrella flourish. 1p, measuring 7" x 9.75", Orange, NJ, August 19, 1929. Addressed to one Charley Derry of Christchurch, New Zealand, an acquaintance from Edison's early days in Newark. Flush mounted to stiff board, with evident separation repairs at folds. Uneven soiling and foxing throughout. Faint smudging to signature, otherwise a fine and bold example.

In full:

"It has been quite a pleasant surprise to receive a letter after the lapse of sixty years since we were acquainted at Gould's shop in Newark. Your letter brings back to my memory the recollection of busy days there.
I am glad to learn that you are still in good health in spite of your eighty five years of age. Although I am only two years your junior my work still continues and I am happy in being able to carry on.
I trust you will be spared many years more of health and strength…."

Sixty years before this letter was written, Edison would have been in his early twenties making a name for himself in the telegraph industry. After moving to New York City in 1869, he soon partnered with Franklin Leonard Pope to invent a one-wire telegraph, now known as the stock ticker. Edison used his money from the partnership to open up his own factory in Newark in the early 1870s, and by 1874, employed several hundred people.

"Gould's shop" is likely in reference to the business of Gould and Eberhardt, previously incorporated as Gould Machine Co., a major builder of metal and woodworking tools based in Newark. One such invention, known as the "Gould Shaper", would have been invaluable to Edison in the production of his telegraphs.
