THOMAS BURLING (NEW YORK CITY, 1747 - 1831) FINE FEDERAL MAHOGANY INLAID SECRETARY BOOKCASE RETAINING ORIGINAL MAKER'S PAPER LABEL.
American, Late 18th Century. Pine secondary. In two pieces. Broken arch pediment with inlaid circular fans, molded cornice, two blind doors with adjustable interior shelves with fluted front edge. Base with applied edge molding, deep upper drawer with two false drawer fronts, opening to reveal a desk with fold-down writing surface having green leather insert, fitted interior with center prospect door, dovetailed drawers and pigeonholes, two lower blind doors and bracket feet. Upper and lower doors and drawer fronts have corresponding bookbinder mahogany panels surrounded by banded and line inlays. Original maker's paper label is retained on inside proper left top door. Missing finials. 95"h. 48.75"w. 22.75"d.

Cataloguer's note: Thomas Burling was a well-known New York cabinet maker, producing both Chippendale and Federal style furniture. His clients included George Washington, whose first Presidential home in New York City was predominantly furnished from Burling's shop; and Thomas Jefferson who purchase Burling furniture for Monticello. Provenance: The Lifetime Collection of Harley Trice (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania).

  • Condition: The molding on the right side of base is present but not attached; the pulls appear to be original in the original holes; missing finial. (JD.7.28.26)
