Title: THIS MAGAZINE IS HAUNTED No. 15
Place Published:
Publisher:Charlton (Indicia: Charlton Comics)
Date Published: February, 1954
Description:

Fair (1.0). Soft, pulpy, creased. Chip and tear to back cover. 2x2" stain to back cover, affecting about a third of the pages. Spine splits up to 2" at both ends, staples pulled. Despite its low grade, this mag still presents nicely, with its classic cover theme of a rotting revenant hell-bent on revenge. Dick Giordano cover. Art by Shelly Moldoff, Bob McCarty, others.

Dick Giordano's cover illustrates Bob McCarty's "The Corpse in the House," a rip-off of George Evans's corpse-concealed-in-the-ceiling yarn "Seep No More" from Shock SuspenStories #8, which was itself a swipe of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart." Swipes and rip-offs were built into the DNA of horror comics — just ask Shelly Moldoff, who claimed to have pitched the horror comics concept to EC's Bill Gaines, only to get bilked out of his cut:

"I said to [Gaines]... 'If I brought you an idea which I feel is gonna be the next trend, would you give me a percentage?' And he said 'absolutely.' So I said, 'I've got an idea, let me work it up, and I'll bring it in. If you like it, then I expect a percentage.' He said, 'No problem.' ...[After launching EC's horror line] he said, 'Well, I decided that I can't pay percentages.... and there's nothin' you can do about it.'" — Moldoff interview, Grant Geissman's Tales of Terror! The EC Companion. Fantagraphics: 2000, p. 66.
