"A short booklet of 28 pages. This is an anonymous address given at a meeting of the New York branch of the Order of Colonial Lords of Manors in America in 1920. The speaker praises the historical significance and beauty of Van Cortlandt Manor, a colonial estate in New York owned by the Van Cortlandt family. It is a fascinating snapshot of early 20th-century American attitudes towards history and heritage. A short survey history of the Van Cortlandt family & the manor house. The Van Cortlandt Manor house, gracefully sitting amid its lawns on a gentle slope overlooking the junction of the Croton River with the Hudson. It was the headquarters of a vast family domain that at one time embraced more than 86,000 acres. One of the early Dutch settlers in the Hudson Valley was granted this land grant which extended for ten miles along the Hudson and twenty miles inland to the Connecticut Colony border. Four whole townships, part of a fifth and the city of Peekskill, NY are all now within the estate's former bounds. Although the lands were divided and parcels sold from time to time, the Manor House itself remained in the Van Cortlandt family for 250 years."
